Biodegradable

Biodegradable doesn’t mean disappearing by magic — it means returning to nature cleanly, without leaving residues or microplastics. Bioplates are made from a proprietary bioplastic compound that breaks down naturally when in contact with the environment, much like organic matter. To prove this, the material was tested and certified by TÜV Austria as 100% biodegradable in soil, river water, seawater, and both home and industrial composting. At the end of its useful life, a Bioplate does not become eternal waste: it simply returns to the planet, without polluting oceans or contributing to plastic accumulation.

Food safe

Food safety is not optional — it is essential. Bioplates are certified by the European Commission food contact certificate (EU) No 10/2011 and are fully safe food contact, containing no toxic substances, no BPA, no phthalates and no harmful additives. Our proprietary bioplastic compound was designed to withstand professional use without releasing chemicals, even under high temperatures and repeated washing cycles. Every Bioplate is created with hospitality in mind: beautiful, durable and, above all, reliable for serving any dish in any setting.

Carbon negative

Being carbon negative means removing more CO2 from the atmosphere than the emissions generated throughout the product’s entire life cycle. With Bioplates, we began by measuring: PIEP calculated a footprint of 0.758 kg CO, eq per plate in the most conservative scenario. Then we go further — we commit to planting one tree for every 100 Bioplates produced, removing more carbon than we emit. In practice, each plate represents around -4.5 kg CO, eq for the hotel or restaurant, becoming a true carbon credit and a clear sustainability statement.

Dishwasher Safe

Bioplates were designed for the demanding reality of hospitality. They withstood more than 7,000 industrial dishwasher cycles at Sublime Comporta, during peak season, without losing colour, gloss or structural integrity. In laboratory tests, the University of Aveiro also confirmed the material’s stability in industrial dishwashers operating at 93 °C, even under repeated use. In practice, this means Bioplates can handle the daily rhythm of restaurants, poolside areas and beach clubs: they do not warp, crack or degrade, and maintain their performance over the years.

Temperature Limitation

Bioplates were developed for professional use, but should not be exposed to temperatures above 130 °C. They must not be placed in the oven, on the grill, or in direct contact with heat sources exceeding this limit. They perform perfectly during service but require this care to ensure durability and material safety.

Awards

Bioplates have been internationally recognised for innovation, design and environmental impact. Among our distinctions are the World Sustainability Award 2025 (Eco Design Winner), honouring solutions that redefine environmental responsibility standards, and the German Design Award 2026 (Eco Design Winner) — one of Europe’s most prestigious design recognitions. Bioplates have also been awarded at the European Product Design Award 2025, receiving distinctions in both Eco Design and the special category Design for Humanity. In addition, the project has been recognised by many other international awards in design and sustainability. These recognitions arrived while the product was still in its early market phase. Today, the most meaningful validation comes from the hospitality partners who use Bioplates every day — proving that sustainability performs.
